Julia Hawkins: Head of Strategy & Investments, Universal Music UK
Julia heads up strategy and investments for UMG UK. This includes both core and strategic investments in catalogue, live (including festivals and theatre), film and TV, as well as early stage tech investments. She works closely with Abbey Road, supporting their incubator and developing some of their businesses like Abbey Road Institute.
Her first job out of university was at Goldman Sachs where she worked in investment banking for four years. She liked the type of work but was passionate about music, so left to join Last.FM. Her primary role there was to start their commercial division. It was an amazing journey that got her interested in the power of digital and connecting with consumers and music fans on a deep level through tech. She left to join BBC Worldwide where she worked in the central strategy team focusing on digital projects, developing things such as BBC’s international iPlayer. It gave her exposure to lots of different media verticals. Her role at Universal has developed over time to include a broad scope of media and entertainment investments.
